Nicholas Carr writes an extremely thought-provoking post about the centripetal web, in which Wikipedia and Google are the twin black holes, sucking in website hits to the detriment of smaller sites.

Continuing the Google theme: Is Google Making us Stupid?, from Atlantic Monthly. Personally I was stupid long before Google came along.

OK, so I take a day off, and come back to find all my RSS feeds from the GNN don’t work. When I click on the links to get the full info, the link is dead. Instead of the GNN they’re now linking back to the News Distribution Service for the Government and Private Sector.
Does anyone else get feeds from the GNN (as was), and are they working for you today?
I can’t get into my account to manage it, which may either be the fault of my new computer, or them wiping me.
Ho hum, off to register as a new user and set everything up again… so much for “everything staying the same”!

New research that shows that we receive an opioid hit from our brains when we look at new information, hence the irrisistable-ness of the internet. Pretty interesting, I think – looking at new things on the internet is a pretty compelling urge. And we do it all day for a living! Does that make us uber-information junkies?

More blog stuff: Cory Doctorow on some very simple rules to encourage people to blog about you. I actually think these rules should apply for pretty much any website.

The Observer published a list of the 50 “most powerful” blogs recently. It’s a pretty interesting list, if a bit predictable. Strangely, we’re not on there!

Man fined £11,000 for downloading Friends on mobile when crossing countries – unsurprisingly, it’s going to be disputed as an unfair charge. The rules for international mobile data transfer really do need to be worked out…

A friend sent me this post yesterday, comparing some of the social technologies of the ’90s with those of today.
And on old vs new technology, how about 1 GB then and now?

I downloaded Simplify Media (discussed down-blog) on my work machine, and wow! Cool! I spent an afternoon listening to Jim’s iTunes library, feeling like a total moocher, because all I’ve got to offer in return so far are the Battlestar Galactica soundtracks and a few random podcast episodes.
It also felt like doing something the RIAA et al. would sternly disapprove of, but I’ve noticed that it doesn’t work if the other person’s machine is off.
In short: very cool tool. If anyone else joins it, you can find me under mak506.
