While I’m here, Ben Goldacre of Bad Science fame has been hit by a takedown notice after posting an audio file of the ignorant blatherings of an LBC radio DJ on MMR vaccinations. Should any media lawyers be reading, I’m sure he’d appreciate some advice!

Something musical for a Friday: here’s an NYT article on Girl Talk, a mashup artist who piles up hundreds of samples of other artists in creating his music. This obviously raises some interesting copyright issues.
He’s released his latest album on a pay what you want basis, available here. I’d recommend it, although it is the musical equivalent of eating too much rich food!

Proof that lobbying works has been born out by the announcement from the European Commission that it will push ahead with plans to extend the term of protection for recorded performances and the record itself from 50 to 95 years – idiots. Feel a blog post coming on.

Inner Temple have covered this, but I think it’s worth flagging in its own right- Outlaw are reportingthat the music industry are lobbying for a tax on MP3 players, to “compensate” for losses incurred by the transfer of CDs to MP3. All redolent of the Home Taping is Killing Music campaign waged by the music industry in the eighties.

The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) has announced that it will shortly be launching a series of new collective digital licences that will permit copying from digital publications, subject to clear restrictions and guidelines, as well as limited the photocopying and scanning of such publications – I missed this last week.

Nebraska Library Commission starts to include Creative Commons licensed editions of books in its catalogue. Story picked up by Boing Boing (and see discussion in comments). Kudos to Michael Sauers!

The Open Rights Group reports on the second reading of a Private Members Bill that will extend copyright terms to a whopping 95 years. The ORG urges people to write to their MPs to protest against this.
